Where’d You Go, Bernadette

The charming tale of a complicated relationship between a mother and her daughter. Bernadette may seem strange to some, but her creative outlook and overly obsessive nature, makes her a comical character in this tale. Having a serious fear of people, Bernadette spends all of her time at home outsourcing her every day tasks to a woman in India. Her daughter, Bee, is a genius 15 year-old who’s humble nature and positive attitude makes her a likable character throughout the book. The father figure there is Elgie, a Microsoft maven, close to Bill Gates, who finds himself to be the black sheep of his three person family.

This book was hard to get into at first, because of its unorthodox style of story telling. The author, Maria Semple, often switches between traditional narration and unconventional narration, such as e-mails, exposes, and letters. As I started to read through the book I became more invested in the characters, the narration simply became background noise as I was transported to dreary Seattle, to the Microsoft campus, and to the creaky old house that sits a top of a hill. The book is a great summer read, because it is funny, it is sad, and you sort of end up going through an emotional roller-coaster in less than 400 pages.

If you are looking for a story that is a bit outlandish, but still displays moments in reality. If you are looking for a tear-jerkier and a jaw dropper, then this is the book for you. I think that Bernadette will have you hating, loving, and laughing with her every step of the way. Wonderful job Maria and I can’t wait to read more of your stories.

I was so happy to pick up this book, recommended on Good Reads, and highly recommend it.
